Basement Foundation Waterproofing Auckland
Protect Your Home From the Ground Up
Your foundation is the most important structural element of your home. Everything above it — every wall, every floor, every roof beam — relies on that foundation being sound, stable, and dry. Basement foundation waterproofing isn’t a cosmetic upgrade or a nice-to-have. It’s the thing that determines whether your property holds its value and structural integrity over the long term, or slowly deteriorates from the ground up.
At Basement Waterproofing Auckland, foundation waterproofing is core work for us. We’ve waterproofed foundations on everything from 1920s bungalows in Ponsonby to new construction in Flat Bush and Hobsonville — and we know exactly what’s required to do it properly in Auckland’s climate and soil conditions.

Basement Waterproofing Auckland came and waterproofed our Auckland basement in June this year. They did an excellent job; communication was very clear and prompt, going above and beyond to keep us informed of progress and to respond to any questions we had. They also quoted clearly and promptly, with every aspect itemised, and kept us informed if changes were needed to the schedule (for example, when the job took a little longer than expected). The workers themselves were lovely, really pleasant, polite and considerate of noise during particular times for me as a homeworker. They left the site very clean and tidy, too. The job they did is fantastic, and we feel confident that we won't have problems with flooding in the future. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to have waterproofing work done, and would certainly employ them in the future.Posted on Google![]()

This winter our basement started leaking suddenly which created a huge problem. John was recommended to us and from start to finish everyone involved with Galaxie plumbing provided a professiomal service that couldnt be faulted. From the outset John provided excellent advice, discussed options with us and to our relief was quick to get his team on site to start the job. The guys were friendly, punctual, always helpful and we are delighted with the finished result. We highly recommend them. Steve and Yolanda BrookingPosted on Google![]()

John and his team provided a superior service over all the other companies I approached for help. Initial response was fast and friendly, and the work was carried out efficiently and tidily. Due to John’s extensive knowledge and experience, he was able to address a serious problem that other companies had baulked at. In heavy rain, stormwater would run under my deck and pour over a block wall into a basement storage area. This resulted in flooding and multiple insurance claims. With limited space to work with, John devised a cost-effective solution which was a work of art in itself. After years of rain anxiety, I am most grateful to John and his amazing team for providing me with some much-needed stress relief.Posted on Google![]()

Your team did a great job. I had a leak in my basement and John was the only one to come out and give me a quote, and he was considerate of my budget and stress. I really couldn't recommend his team more highly throughout the process. Everyone was courteous and respectful of my experience. The end result was a sealed basement and a new storm drain system installed into my storm drain system. Thank you so much, I am so grateful I chose this company.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. What Is Basement Foundation Waterproofing?
Foundation waterproofing refers specifically to the waterproofing treatment applied to the below-ground portion of your home’s foundation walls — the part of the structure that’s in contact with the soil and groundwater. The foundation base, the footing, and the lower section of your block or concrete walls are the areas most exposed to water and hydrostatic pressure.
Proper foundation waterproofing involves applying a continuous, durable waterproof membrane to the exterior face of the foundation walls, combined with drainage systems that manage groundwater and prevent hydrostatic pressure from building up against the foundation. The goal is to keep the foundation consistently dry, which maintains its structural integrity and prevents water from migrating upward into the basement space.
Why Foundation Waterproofing Matters in Auckland
Our Rainfall
Auckland receives approximately 1,200mm of rainfall annually across around 135 rain days. That’s a significant and consistent volume of water moving through the soil surrounding every foundation in the city. Properties on slopes deal with additional groundwater movement as water travels downhill through the soil profile. Even in drier months, Auckland’s water table in many areas remains relatively high.
Our Soils
Auckland soils vary significantly — from free-draining volcanic soils on the North Shore to the heavy clay soils common across much of the isthmus and south Auckland. Heavy clay soils hold water and transmit hydrostatic pressure very effectively against your foundation walls. Properties built on clay need particularly robust foundation waterproofing and drainage systems.
Our Building Stock
A significant proportion of Auckland’s residential housing stock was built between the 1920s and 1980s — a period when foundation waterproofing standards were far less rigorous than they are today. Many of these properties either have minimal original waterproofing that has now failed, or waterproofing that was applied with products and methods that simply weren’t as effective as what’s available now.
Foundation Waterproofing for New Construction
If you’re building new in Auckland, getting foundation waterproofing done right from the start is the smartest investment you can make. The cost of waterproofing during construction — when excavation is already happening and the foundation walls are exposed — is significantly lower than retrofitting waterproofing to an existing structure later.
We work with builders and developers across Auckland on new construction waterproofing. We attend site at the right stage of the build, apply the membrane system to the foundation walls, install the drainage system, and provide the documentation your builder and insurer need. Getting us involved early means the foundation waterproofing integrates properly with your drainage design rather than being an afterthought.
Foundation Waterproofing for Existing Properties
For properties that already have a foundation that’s leaking, damp, or showing signs of water damage, the process involves excavating around the affected areas to expose the foundation walls, removing failed membrane, repairing any damage to the block work, and applying a new comprehensive waterproofing system.
This is more involved than new construction waterproofing, but it’s absolutely achievable. We’ve remediated foundation waterproofing on properties throughout Auckland — some that had been dealing with basement water problems for decades — and the results are permanent when done properly.
Signs Your Foundation Needs Waterproofing Attention
- Active water leaks through the base of your basement walls, particularly where the wall meets the floor slab
- Horizontal cracking in your foundation walls — this can indicate hydrostatic pressure causing structural stress
- Efflorescence (white mineral deposits) running down your block walls
- Damp soil immediately against your foundation after dry weather, suggesting water is not draining away properly
- Previous water damage visible as staining, rusting, or spalling on the lower sections of your basement walls
- Any evidence that your original foundation waterproofing membrane has cracked, peeled, or otherwise failed
What We Use and Why
Our company use professional-grade waterproofing membranes specified for below-grade applications in New Zealand conditions. These products are selected based on the substrate (block, poured concrete, or mixed construction), the severity of water exposure, and the drainage solution being installed alongside them.
We don’t use consumer-grade products, and we don’t take shortcuts on surface preparation. A waterproofing membrane is only as good as the surface it’s applied to if the block wall isn’t properly cleaned, repaired, and prepared, even the best membrane will fail prematurely.
