External Basement Waterproofing Auckland
If you want your basement waterproofed properly, not managed, not monitored, not hoped for, external waterproofing is the way to go. It’s the gold standard for a reason: it stops water before it ever makes contact with your block wall, rather than dealing with it after it’s already breached your defences.
At our company, exterior waterproofing is one of our core specialties. We’ve done it across hundreds of Auckland properties, from inner-city character homes to new construction in the outer suburbs, and we know what it takes to get it right in New Zealand conditions.

Basement Waterproofing Auckland came and waterproofed our Auckland basement in June this year. They did an excellent job; communication was very clear and prompt, going above and beyond to keep us informed of progress and to respond to any questions we had. They also quoted clearly and promptly, with every aspect itemised, and kept us informed if changes were needed to the schedule (for example, when the job took a little longer than expected). The workers themselves were lovely, really pleasant, polite and considerate of noise during particular times for me as a homeworker. They left the site very clean and tidy, too. The job they did is fantastic, and we feel confident that we won't have problems with flooding in the future. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to have waterproofing work done, and would certainly employ them in the future.Posted on Google![]()

This winter our basement started leaking suddenly which created a huge problem. John was recommended to us and from start to finish everyone involved with Galaxie plumbing provided a professiomal service that couldnt be faulted. From the outset John provided excellent advice, discussed options with us and to our relief was quick to get his team on site to start the job. The guys were friendly, punctual, always helpful and we are delighted with the finished result. We highly recommend them. Steve and Yolanda BrookingPosted on Google![]()

John and his team provided a superior service over all the other companies I approached for help. Initial response was fast and friendly, and the work was carried out efficiently and tidily. Due to John’s extensive knowledge and experience, he was able to address a serious problem that other companies had baulked at. In heavy rain, stormwater would run under my deck and pour over a block wall into a basement storage area. This resulted in flooding and multiple insurance claims. With limited space to work with, John devised a cost-effective solution which was a work of art in itself. After years of rain anxiety, I am most grateful to John and his amazing team for providing me with some much-needed stress relief.Posted on Google![]()

Your team did a great job. I had a leak in my basement and John was the only one to come out and give me a quote, and he was considerate of my budget and stress. I really couldn't recommend his team more highly throughout the process. Everyone was courteous and respectful of my experience. The end result was a sealed basement and a new storm drain system installed into my storm drain system. Thank you so much, I am so grateful I chose this company.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. What Is External Basement Waterproofing?
External basement waterproofing, also called exterior waterproofing, involves excavating the soil around your foundation or basement walls to expose the exterior face of the block or concrete, then applying a professional-grade waterproofing membrane directly to that surface. The membrane creates a continuous, impenetrable barrier that prevents water from getting anywhere near your walls in the first place.
The process doesn’t stop at the membrane. We also install proper drainage systems, typically novacoil perforated pipe and/or open gatic drains, that capture groundwater and direct it away from your foundation toward stormwater systems or appropriate drainage points on your property. The membrane stops water penetrating the wall; the drainage system stops water building up against it.
Why External Waterproofing Beats Interior Methods
Interior waterproofing systems have their place, there are situations where excavating isn’t feasible due to access constraints, built structures overhead, or cost. But if you have a genuine choice between interior and exterior waterproofing, exterior wins every time, for these reasons:
- It addresses the problem at the source, water never reaches your walls
- It prevents hydrostatic pressure from building up against the wall, which protects the structural integrity of the block work over the long term
- There’s no ongoing moisture management inside your basement, no sump pumps to service, no interior membranes to monitor
- It extends the life of your foundation and block walls by keeping them consistently dry
- It’s the appropriate solution for new construction and major renovation projects where excavation is already happening
Interior systems can be a good solution for managing water that’s already getting in, but they’re managing the symptom, not fixing the cause. Exterior waterproofing fixes the cause.
Our External Waterproofing Process
Site Assessment
Before we do anything, we assess your site thoroughly. We look at soil conditions, groundwater levels, drainage patterns, access for excavation equipment, and the condition of the existing block wall. This lets us design a solution that’s right for your specific property rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Excavation
We excavate down to the base of the foundation, exposing the full height of the exterior wall face. This is done carefully to avoid disturbing the structural integrity of the foundation and to manage any services (pipes, cables) that might be running alongside the wall.
Surface Preparation
The exposed block wall surface is cleaned and prepared, removing old failed membrane, repairing any cracks or damaged mortar joints, and ensuring the surface is sound and ready to accept the new waterproofing system.
Membrane Application
We apply a professional-grade waterproofing membrane from sub-floor level up to ground level, ensuring complete coverage with no gaps, pinholes, or weak points. We use materials specifically selected for New Zealand’s rainfall patterns, temperature range, and soil conditions, not cheap imported products that aren’t suited to our environment.
Drainage Installation
A drainage layer and perforated pipe system (novacoil) is installed at the base of the wall before backfilling. This ensures that any water reaching the foundation area is captured and directed away efficiently, preventing pressure buildup against the new membrane.
Backfill and Reinstatement
The excavated area is carefully backfilled with appropriate material, compacted correctly, and the surface reinstated. We leave your property tidy, we’re not the type to dig up your garden and leave you to sort it out.
Which Auckland Properties Need External Waterproofing?
External waterproofing is particularly common and important for:
- Older Auckland homes in suburbs like Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Mt Albert, and Epsom with aging block wall basements that have lost their original waterproofing protection.
- Properties on sloped sections in areas like Titirangi, Glendowie, Northcote Point, and Hillsborough where groundwater movement is significant
- New construction throughout Auckland where proper exterior waterproofing from the outset avoids future problems.
- Commercial buildings with below-grade structures that need guaranteed water exclusion.
- Properties in lower-lying areas or those with high water tables, including parts of New Lynn, Henderson, and Mangere.
If your property had a basement leak repaired with an interior system previously and the problem has returned, external waterproofing is likely what’s needed to permanently resolve it.
