FAQ

Auckland Basement Waterproofing

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does block wall waterproofing last?

Quality waterproofing installed correctly should last 20 years or more, depending on the materials used and site conditions. The key to longevity is proper installation and maintenance. That means using the right materials for Auckland conditions, installing adequate drainage, ensuring proper surface preparation, and maintaining your drainage systems (cleaning gutters, ensuring downspouts discharge away from foundations, keeping weep holes clear). Our company has seen waterproofing systems we installed 25+ years ago still performing perfectly, and we’ve also seen DIY jobs fail within 5 years. The quality of the work matters enormously.

Can I waterproof my basement myself?

Firstly – technically, yes. Realistically? I’d strongly recommend against it for anything beyond small, simple projects. Here’s why: waterproofing looks straightforward until you realize you need to understand hydrostatic pressure, material compatibility, surface preparation requirements, and local building codes. Plus we guarantee our work and this is important for insurance purposes.

Secondly – A registered Certifying drainlayer is needed for any drainage carried out around your property. We have several experienced Certifying drainlayers on staff with years of experience under their belts. A failed ‘do it yourself’ drainage system will not be covered by any private or commercial insurance & Council and the NZ Plumbers & Drainlayers Board would take a dim view. There have been prosecutions taken by the board in the past.

We see failed DIY waterproofing jobs regularly – usually after the homeowner has already spent money on materials and wasted weekends trying to fix a problem that’s now worse than when they started. The most common DIY mistakes include inadequate surface preparation, using the wrong materials for the application, poor drainage design, and failing to address the root cause of water intrusion. Professional waterproofing costs more upfront but saves you money long-term by actually solving the problem correctly the first time.

What's the difference between waterproofing and damp-proofing?

This is an excellent question that many people don’t think to ask. Damp-proofing provides basic moisture resistance and is suitable for areas with minimal water exposure – think moisture vapor rather than actual water pressure. It’s like a light rain jacket.

Waterproofing, on the other hand, creates a complete barrier against water intrusion and can withstand hydrostatic pressure (water pressure from saturated soil pushing against your walls). It’s like a diving suit. For Auckland’s climate and especially for below-grade applications like basements and foundations, you need actual waterproofing, not just damp-proofing. Some contractors will try to sell damp-proofing as waterproofing because it’s cheaper and faster – don’t fall for it. True waterproofing costs more but it’s the only thing that actually works when you’re dealing with significant water pressure.

How do I know if my basement walls need waterproofing?

Several signs indicate your block walls need attention: visible water seepage or damp patches on interior walls, white mineral deposits (efflorescence) on block surfaces, musty odors in basements or enclosed areas, mould or mildew growth, peeling paint or wallpaper, cracks in walls or floors, and rust on metal components.

You might also notice increased humidity levels, standing water after rain, or damage to stored items. If you’re in a high-risk area (sloped property, high water table, poor drainage, or you’ve experienced flooding), it’s worth getting an inspection even if you haven’t noticed obvious problems yet. Waterproofing is much cheaper than water damage repairs, so proactive protection makes financial sense. We offer free inspections throughout Auckland – we’ll assess your situation and give you honest advice about whether waterproofing is necessary and what approach makes the most sense for your property.

Will waterproofing fix cracks in my block walls?

Waterproofing and crack repair often go hand-in-hand, but they’re not the same thing. Cracks need to be properly repaired before waterproofing can be effective – you can’t just slap a membrane over a crack and hope for the best.

Our process involves first determining why the crack formed (settlement, structural issues, hydrostatic pressure, etc.), then repairing it with appropriate materials (epoxy or polyurethane injections for smaller cracks, structural reinforcement for larger issues), and finally waterproofing the wall to prevent future water infiltration. For structural cracks or cracks that indicate foundation problems, we may recommend bringing in a structural engineer to assess the situation before proceeding with repairs. The bottom line: cracks are serious and need proper attention – both repair and waterproofing – to prevent ongoing problems.

What's the best time of year to waterproof block walls in Auckland?

Ideally, we prefer to do exterior waterproofing during Auckland’s drier months (typically late spring through early autumn), when the ground is less saturated and we’re less likely to have work interrupted by rain. That said, we work year-round because water damage doesn’t wait for perfect weather conditions.

Interior waterproofing can be done any time of year since we’re working inside. If you’re noticing water problems, don’t wait for the “perfect” time – every day you delay is another day that water is potentially damaging your property. We’ve developed techniques and use protective measures that allow us to work effectively even during Auckland’s wetter months. The worst time to call us is after you’ve already got significant water damage – the second worst time is never. The best time? As soon as you notice issues or, even better, proactively before problems develop.

Do you offer warranties on your waterproofing work?

Absolutely. We stand behind our work with comprehensive warranties that cover both materials and labor. The specific warranty period depends on the type of waterproofing system installed and the materials used, but typically ranges from 10-25 years for our installations.

Our warranties cover failure due to material defects or installation issues – basically, if our work fails because we screwed up, we fix it at no cost to you. What our warranties don’t cover are things like damage from physical impact, modifications to the waterproofing system, failure to maintain drainage systems, or damage from events beyond our control (like if a massive tree root grows through your foundation). We provide all warranty information in writing as part of your project documentation, so you’ll know exactly what’s covered. Unlike some operators who disappear after collecting payment, we’re a local Auckland business that’s here for the long haul.
