Retaining Wall Waterproofing Auckland
Stop Hydrostatic Pressure Before It Wins
Auckland is built on hills. Drive through Titirangi, Glendowie, Northcote Point, Hillsborough, or pretty much any suburb more than a kilometre from the waterfront and you’ll see retaining walls everywhere, holding back sloped sections, supporting driveways, keeping gardens from sliding into the neighbour’s yard. They’re a fundamental part of how this city functions.
What most property owners don’t fully appreciate is how much pressure those retaining walls are under, and how much worse that pressure gets when the soil behind them is saturated with water. Retaining wall waterproofing and drainage isn’t about keeping your wall looking nice. It’s about keeping it standing.
At Basement Waterproofing Auckland, retaining wall waterproofing is core work. We’ve waterproofed and drained block retaining walls across the full Auckland region, from small residential garden walls to large commercial retaining structures along major road corridors. We know what these walls need and we know how to deliver it.

Basement Waterproofing Auckland came and waterproofed our Auckland basement in June this year. They did an excellent job; communication was very clear and prompt, going above and beyond to keep us informed of progress and to respond to any questions we had. They also quoted clearly and promptly, with every aspect itemised, and kept us informed if changes were needed to the schedule (for example, when the job took a little longer than expected). The workers themselves were lovely, really pleasant, polite and considerate of noise during particular times for me as a homeworker. They left the site very clean and tidy, too. The job they did is fantastic, and we feel confident that we won't have problems with flooding in the future. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to have waterproofing work done, and would certainly employ them in the future.Posted on Google![]()

This winter our basement started leaking suddenly which created a huge problem. John was recommended to us and from start to finish everyone involved with Galaxie plumbing provided a professiomal service that couldnt be faulted. From the outset John provided excellent advice, discussed options with us and to our relief was quick to get his team on site to start the job. The guys were friendly, punctual, always helpful and we are delighted with the finished result. We highly recommend them. Steve and Yolanda BrookingPosted on Google![]()

John and his team provided a superior service over all the other companies I approached for help. Initial response was fast and friendly, and the work was carried out efficiently and tidily. Due to John’s extensive knowledge and experience, he was able to address a serious problem that other companies had baulked at. In heavy rain, stormwater would run under my deck and pour over a block wall into a basement storage area. This resulted in flooding and multiple insurance claims. With limited space to work with, John devised a cost-effective solution which was a work of art in itself. After years of rain anxiety, I am most grateful to John and his amazing team for providing me with some much-needed stress relief.Posted on Google![]()

Your team did a great job. I had a leak in my basement and John was the only one to come out and give me a quote, and he was considerate of my budget and stress. I really couldn't recommend his team more highly throughout the process. Everyone was courteous and respectful of my experience. The end result was a sealed basement and a new storm drain system installed into my storm drain system. Thank you so much, I am so grateful I chose this company.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. Why Retaining Walls Fail, And Why Water Is Usually the Culprit
A retaining wall that’s been built correctly and maintained properly should last for decades. So why do so many fail? In most cases, water is either the direct cause or a major contributing factor.
Here’s what happens. Rain falls on the slope above your wall and soaks into the soil. Clay-heavy Auckland soils, common across much of the isthmus, don’t drain quickly. They hold that water, and as more rain falls, more water accumulates in the soil mass sitting behind your wall. Water-saturated soil is significantly heavier than dry soil, and that additional weight translates directly into pressure on your wall. This is called hydrostatic pressure, and it’s relentless.
Without proper drainage to relieve that pressure, and without waterproofing to protect the wall face from constant moisture exposure, here’s what you get:
- Horizontal cracking in the block work as the wall begins to bow under pressure
- Mortar joint deterioration as moisture cycles through freeze-thaw and wet-dry cycles
- Spalling of the block face as moisture gets into the block matrix and breaks it down over time
- Movement and displacement of the wall as the foundation is undermined by water
- In serious cases, partial or complete wall failure, which is exactly as bad and as expensive as it sounds
The good news is that most retaining wall water problems are entirely preventable with proper waterproofing and drainage, and many existing walls showing early signs of water damage can be remediated before they reach the point of structural failure.
Our Retaining Wall Waterproofing Services
New Retaining Wall Waterproofing
If you’re building a new block retaining wall, or having one built, getting the waterproofing and drainage right from the start is far cheaper and easier than retrofitting it later. We work with builders and landscapers across Auckland on new retaining wall construction, attending site at the appropriate stage to install drainage systems and apply waterproofing to the back face of the wall before backfilling.
The standard approach for a new block retaining wall involves applying a waterproof membrane or tanking system to the retained face of the wall, installing a drainage layer of clean aggregate against the wall face, laying novacoil perforated drainage pipe at the base of the wall to capture and redirect water, and ensuring the drainage connects to an appropriate outlet, stormwater system, soakage field, or natural drainage point.
Done properly at the time of construction, this system protects the wall for the life of the structure and eliminates the hydrostatic pressure problem before it starts.
Existing Retaining Wall Drainage Retrofit
Many Auckland retaining walls were built without adequate drainage, either because it wasn’t standard practice at the time of construction, because cost was cut during the build, or simply because the original owner didn’t know better. If your wall is showing signs of water pressure, cracking, leaning, damp patches, weeping joints, a drainage retrofit can relieve that pressure and significantly extend the wall’s life.
Retrofitting drainage to an existing retaining wall typically involves installing weep holes through the wall at regular intervals to allow trapped water to escape, excavating at the base of the wall where access allows to install perforated drainage pipe, and in some cases partial excavation behind the wall to install a proper drainage layer. The right approach depends on the wall’s construction, its current condition, and what access is available.
We assess each wall individually and recommend the most practical and cost-effective drainage solution for the specific situation. Where a wall has deteriorated beyond the point where retrofit drainage is sufficient on its own, we’ll tell you that honestly, and discuss what the realistic options are.
Retaining Wall Waterproofing and Surface Protection
Beyond drainage, the exposed block face of a retaining wall benefits from waterproofing treatment that prevents moisture penetration into the block matrix itself. Concrete blocks are porous, they absorb moisture from rain and from any soil contact, and that moisture causes gradual deterioration over time.
We apply professional-grade waterproofing coatings to retaining wall surfaces that reduce moisture absorption, protect the mortar joints, and extend the life of the block work. For walls that are showing early signs of surface deterioration, repointing damaged mortar joints before applying a protective coating can add many years to a wall that might otherwise need replacement.
Signs Your Retaining Wall Needs Waterproofing or Drainage Attention
- Horizontal cracks running across the wall face, these indicate bending stress from hydrostatic pressure and need urgent attention
- The wall is visibly leaning or has moved from its original position
- Water weeping through the wall face or at the base of the wall after rain
- Efflorescence, white chalky mineral deposits on the wall surface caused by water moving through the block work
- Damp or wet soil at the base of the wall long after rain has stopped, suggesting water isn’t draining away
- Spalling or flaking of the block face surface
- Cracks in mortar joints, particularly horizontal joints
- The wall was built without weep holes or visible drainage provision
If your wall is showing any of these signs, it’s worth having it assessed sooner rather than later. Retaining wall issues don’t stabilise on their own, the pressure doesn’t go away when it stops raining. Each wet season adds more stress to a wall that’s already compromised.
Auckland Suburbs Where Retaining Wall Problems Are Common
Because of Auckland’s topography, retaining wall waterproofing issues are concentrated in the hillier parts of the city. Areas where we regularly work on retaining wall problems include:
- Titirangi, Green Bay, and New Lynn, steep sections with significant groundwater movement
- Glendowie, St Heliers, and Mission Bay, sloped coastal properties with older retaining walls
- Northcote Point, Birkenhead, and Glenfield, North Shore hill suburbs with clay-heavy soils
- Hillsborough, Mt Roskill, and Three Kings, central Auckland slopes with mixed construction
- Epsom, Remuera, and Parnell, older established suburbs with retaining walls that have seen many decades of Auckland winters
- Titirangi Road, Great North Road, and other major arterials where road-adjacent retaining walls face additional drainage challenges
That said, retaining wall water problems can occur anywhere in Auckland where there’s a change in ground level, even relatively modest walls on flat-ish sections can have drainage issues if they were built without proper provision for water management.
Block Retaining Walls vs Timber Pole Walls, Different Problems, Different Solutions
It’s worth noting that concrete block retaining walls and timber pole retaining walls present different waterproofing and drainage challenges.
Block walls are solid and rigid, they resist hydrostatic pressure by their mass and the strength of the block-and-mortar structure. When drainage fails behind a block wall, pressure builds until something gives, usually in the form of cracking or movement. Waterproofing and drainage for block walls focuses on keeping the wall dry and relieving pressure before it builds to damaging levels.
Timber pole walls flex more than block walls, which gives them some capacity to handle pressure, but the poles and the timber cladding or sleepers between them are vulnerable to rot when constantly wet. Drainage is critical for timber retaining walls, keeping the timber dry directly extends its serviceable life. We can assess and improve drainage for timber pole walls and apply appropriate preservative treatments, though major structural issues with failing timber walls typically require rebuilding rather than waterproofing treatment.
What to Expect When You Call Us
When you contact us about a retaining wall, John or one of the team will come out to your property for a free inspection. We’ll look at the wall’s construction, its current condition, the drainage situation, and the soil and water conditions on your site. We’ll give you an honest assessment of the wall’s condition and what it needs, whether that’s a drainage retrofit, surface waterproofing treatment, or a more involved remediation.
We give you a clear written quote before any work starts. No surprises on the invoice, no extra charges that appear after we’ve already dug in. If during the work we find something that changes the scope, we talk to you about it before we proceed.
We’re also fully insured for public liability, and we warranty our waterproofing work, because we’re confident in what we do.
